About

April Scully

Mother, Risk-Taker & Optimist

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had an affinity for blank books and empty boxes. At an early age, the blank pages became a canvas for words and reflections, evolving into a passion for journaling, while the boxes continue to fill with treasures from a collection of life experiences.

Over the past 20 years, I feel like I’ve lived a dozen lives. I’ve traveled to more than 25 countries and have lived in three: Canada, South Korea and the U.S. My career has taken me on a winding path from teaching, to program and event planning, nonprofit management, and most recently working with my husband on crowdfunding and launching a startup.

Now I’m doing the most challenging and rewarding job of my life: being a mom. My husband and I have two young children (a six-year-old son and two-year-old daughter) and a small business. We’ve lived in three different states in our six years of marriage. Enough commitment to feel stable — enough change to feel sane.

My best days are when we take the kids exploring. I love attempting to capture who they are at that moment in time (because they’ll be someone else next week!) and chronicling the day’s adventures. I have an appreciation for simple pleasures like a jam jar filled with wildflowers, piano jazz on a rainy day and treasure hunting on a cold, empty beach.

I’m a Canadian living my best life in The South.

As a former classroom teacher and current homeschooling mom, I see my job as having two primary functions: 1) provide my kids with as many new experiences and opportunities as possible 2) let them choose what they’re interested in exploring and get out of their way.

This blog is the story of our family’s eclectic homeschooling days. Like all other parents, my husband and I hope every day that we’re doing right by our kids. At this juncture, we believe a values-driven, interest-led approach to learning is the right fit for our family. And we believe it will guide us in raising confident, resilient risk-takers who will be unwilling to compromise in pursuit of their dreams.

Inspire AWE and let them BE.

I hope you’ll join me in this conversation.
