About

April Scully

Mother, Risk-Taker & Optimist

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had an affinity for blank books and empty boxes. At an early age, the blank pages became a canvas for words and reflections, evolving into a passion for journaling, while the boxes continue to fill with treasures from a collection of life experiences.

Over the past 20 years, I feel like I’ve lived a dozen lives. I’ve traveled to more than 25 countries and have lived in three: Canada, South Korea and the U.S.

I’ve always believed that life was too short to do things the way they’ve always been done. I was more interested in crafting my own story that began with “living my retirement first”. I didn’t want to wait to do the things I might never get a chance to do — so I did them!

My adventures were driven by my intuition and challenging myself to find a life I was excited to wake up to every day. I’ve always felt that I was in control of my destiny and reality was what I made it.

Jump and the net will appear.

I’m a free spirit and promised myself that I would never settle for a life partner who wasn’t the right fit in every way. My gut would know when it was right. I got married at age 37 and the adventures continued. I became a mom at age 39 and again at 43.

We’re a tight-knit, unconventional, adventuresome crew with a small business, and second business (about home education!) in the works. We’ve lived in three states and five homes in our ten years of marriage. Enough commitment to feel stable — enough change to feel sane.

We’re home-educating our kids with a goal of raising confident, resilient risk-takers who will be unwilling to compromise in pursuit of their dreams.

I believe the best way to do that is to lead by example, so that’s what I’m doing here.

This blog is my playbook: a compilation of stories and reflections from my life that have led me to where I am today: feeling like the heroine of my own life story.

I’m writing them for my kids because I believe each generation should do their best to pass on their life learning to the next. We should collectively be getting better at life instead of fighting the same battles with each generation.

I hope they’ll resonate and be useful on your life’s journey, too.
